Summer Reading List

2008

May 12, 2008

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The end of the school year is fast approaching. As our students prepare for summertime fun and beach
activities, they also need to stock up on good reading for under the sun. We are pleased to provide
your child with an opportunity to continue the “Reading Habit” over the summer. Attached you will
find the Broward County Middle Schools’ Summer Reading List, as well as, accompanying
activities. It is required that your child read two of the suggested books listed on the Summer
Reading List
. Students must choose one book from List A and another from List B. However, if you
are unable to locate and purchase the books listed because of stores being sold out or if your child has
read all of the titles, there is an alternative. You may choose titles written by the same author or titles
of the same genre. There are also alternative assignments designed for these selections.

The Summer Reading Lists are being distributed through our Language Arts Department. The
Language Arts teachers are also responsible for the collection of the activities that accompany the
books read over the summer vacation. We will be collecting the completed assignments within the first
three weeks of school. Every student will be required to turn in these assignments with no exception.

It is imperative for your child to complete this assignment by September 8, 2008, as this will be
reflected on your child’s report card for the first marking period. Please be advised that this is a county
mandated program, and we are aligning our goals with the district’s expectations. Therefore, students
have signed a Student Accountability Form that will serve as a receipt that your child received these
documents either from their fifth grade teacher in elementary school or Language Arts teachers in
middle school.

Silver Trail Middle School’s mission is to produce avid readers and life long learners. Thank you for
your support and cooperation in your child’s academic career. If you have any questions or concerns
please contact Christine Centrone-Walker, Reading Specialist at 754-323-4300
ext. 2021.

Sincerely,

Christine Centrone

Each child must read a minimum of two books.  One from list A and one from list B. Books should be selected from the grade-level list the student will be entering this fall. If quantities are limited, librarians and bookstore personnel can recommend other titles written by the author or titles of the same genre.
